Pen Drive Data Recovery: Small Design Studio Back in Business

Table of Content

A 5-person graphics design team in Kolkata discovered that their pen drive no longer appeared on any workstation. This was a 64 GB USB 3.0 drive used for site visits.

The drive held a 13.58 GB collection of drawings, contract drafts, and reference images for three projects that were due for client sign-off the next month. Without those files, the studio risked losing its client’s business.

There was no backup.

Recovery software failed to even detect the device.

So, the studio’s owner felt they needed the expertise of a professional pen drive data recovery service.

How the Customer Found Stellar

A web search for pen drive data recovery in Kolkata led the studio’s owner to Stellar Data Recovery. Our pen drive data recovery specialist helped them share relevant details, based on which, we assured them that there was a decent chance of successful data recovery from the pen drive.

By the next morning, we had arranged a courier to collect the pen drive and deliver it to our service desk at the Kolkata office.

System Specifications:

  • Device type: SanDisk Ultra Fit pen drive
  • Capacity: 64 GB (single NTFS partition)
  • Interface: USB 3.0
  • Observed fault: Early memory cells contained bad blocks that caused the controller to time out, so the drive never reached the point where Windows could assign a drive letter.
  • Data at risk :58 GB of drawings, business documents, and image assets

Solution and Pen Drive Data Recovery Approach

Step 1. Initial Assessment

Engineers confirmed that conventional software would not help. They did so when they observed that unreadable memory cells halted every access attempt. To avoid further wear, all recovery work had to be performed on a cloned drive, not on the pen drive itself.

Step 2. Safe Imaging

Using Stellar’s write-blocked hardware imager, technicians made repeated, low-speed passes over the pen drive. Healthy sectors were cloned immediately. Damaged sectors were revisited with gentler read settings. After five passes, 99 percent of the device surface was captured, including the master file table (MFT).

Step 3. File-System Reconstruction:

The image was loaded into a sealed analysis environment. The primary partition entry was gone, but a backup record was intact. By reading that backup and the NTFS transaction log, specialists rebuilt the correct start-and-end points of the partition. The volume then mounted normally inside the sandbox.

Step 4. Selective Data Extraction

With the file system restored, our technicians focused on individual project folders. Each image and MS Office file was checked with a hash comparison to ensure no involuntary corruption.

Throughout the process, we kept sending progress updates to the design studio, including confirmation of safe receipt, imaging success, and data-integrity validation.

Data Delivery

Because the files were commercially sensitive, Stellar exported the recovered data to an encrypted external hard drive. A door-to-door courier returned the media to the client before close of business the next day—well within the requested 1-week window.

Customer Feedback

In a brief video testimonial, the studio’s owner said:
Customer testimonial

“Losing those drawings would have cost us two projects and weeks of rework. Stellar gave us clear status reports and delivered sooner than promised.

The studio estimated that timely recovery saved them a lot of re-drafting efforts, and they could resume without any financial or reputational damage.
