SD Card Data Recovery

Case Overview

A Mumbai-based professional photographer approached Stellar Data Recovery after 50 GB of important event footage on a Sony SD card became inaccessible during file transfer. Some clips appeared in .RSV format, while others transferred successfully but would not play. With no backup available and project delivery deadline approaching, the client needed a reliable SD card recovery solution.

Client’s Story

Our client, who had recently shot a family event, was transferring the videos to his personal computer when interruption happened without any error message. Unfortunately, he did not have any backups of recorded videos. Additionally, the video files from the same event that were successfully transferred were not playable on VLC or Windows media player. Ideally, the files should have been in MP4 format; however, they appeared in RSV format instead. Also, the camera that was used to record the event had been in regular use.

Note: .RSV is a temporary file format generated by Sony cameras that stores metadata information.

Causes of RSV File Corruption

  • Clip writing cannot be completed due to sudden power loss or low battery.
  • Improper ejection of the memory card while the indicator light is still blinking.
  • Prolonged shooting causes excessive heat, which may lead to RSV file corruption.

Business Impact

The video file (RSV)  corruption had a direct impact on the client’s business & reputation. It is difficult to overstate the impact of video file corruption on a professional wedding photographer’s business. For professionals in the process of building their brand, such incidents can significantly damage their reputation, especially where personal and important memories of personal events are involved. Events, whether personal or corporate, cannot be recreated, making captured moments priceless. Additionally, delays in delivery the edited work also result in financial loss.

SD card Recovery Process

As a first step of SD card recovery, our experts at Stellar performed detailed media inspection and found that Video files were inaccessible due to the RSV file format. The file structure was also internally damaged and file header was also partially corrupted.

Stellar’s experts first created a clone of the Sony memory card to protect the original media. After extracting the affected RSV files, the team analyzed them against healthy reference MP4 files recorded on the same camera. The damaged video structure and partially corrupted headers were repaired using proprietary tools, and the recovered footage was converted into playable MP4 files for client verification.

Outcome

Approximately 50 GB of video data was recovered by our experts. As the final step, the recovered video files were verified by the client before delivery.

What Not to Do to Fix Sony RSV Files

  • Avoid trying to change the file format forcefully by renaming RSV to MP4 in your file manager.
  • Do not delete the RSV files, as this may lead to permanent data loss.
  • If the camera does not automatically prompt you to repair the files, do not attempt to repair them through the menu.
