TRIM-Enabled LITE-ON 120GB SSD

Overview:

This case study outlines the recovery process for a 120GB LITE-ON SSD (Model Number: PH6-CE120) belonging to an individual customer, who faced data loss due to the TRIM function being enabled.

Client Background:

An individual user relied heavily on the SSD to store critical personal and professional data. Unfortunately, enabling the TRIM function led to significant data loss, prompting the need for specialized data recovery services.

Addressing Key Challenges in Data Recovery:

The primary challenge involved recovering data from an SSD with TRIM enabled, which complicates recovery efforts by marking data blocks as free, potentially leading to irreversible data loss.

Data Recovery Actions & Approach:

Upon receiving the SSD, our technical experts conducted a thorough assessment to determine the extent of the damage and the feasibility of data recovery.

  • Initial Assessment:
  • Client’s Action: The client reported data loss after the TRIM function was enabled on the SSD. They sought immediate recovery assistance.
  • Recovery Strategy:
  1. Electrical Component Check: Engineers confirmed that the electrical components of the SSD were functioning correctly.
  2. Controller Analysis: The team read the controller's internal settings and examined the controller database, discovering that the unique translator configuration file was empty due to the TRIM command.
  3. Data Chip Inspection: Despite the TRIM command, the data chips were found to be filled with encrypted data via "on-the-fly encryption."

Data Recovery Success:

Our engineers devised a plan to recreate the unique translator configuration file, which was crucial in successfully mapping the encrypted data on the SSD. They then uploaded the newly created configuration virtually onto the SSD software and performed a byte-to-byte cloning of the drive.

Upon completion of the imaging process, the client’s requirement for 100% data recovery was successfully met.
